Drunk (stylized as dRuNk) is a song by Zayn Malik. It appears as the sixth track on his debut studio album Mind of Mine.

"Drunk" highlights the album's recurring theme of "emotionally labile intoxicated love",[1] which is a common theme in Islamic poetry.[2]

Background

"Drunk" incorporates elements from 1990s R&B music. "Drunk" usually sounds like something resembling a slowed down version of R. Kelly’s ‘Ignition (Remix)’.[3]

The idea for the song came about when Zayn wa working with the Hannides and one of them was telling him he'd just been to a music festival where everybody had got wasted.

Zayn took the vibe into a more downtime space and "Drunk" became a song for home, but inspired by what happens when you go out.

Lyrics

We're so late nights
Red eyes, amnesia, on ice
Late nights, red eyes, amnesia, I need you

Right now I can't see straight
Intoxicated it's true
When I'm with you
I'm buzzing and I feel laced
I'm coming from a different phase
When I'm with you

Run away now
Like we're supposed to do
Take you to the back now
I take a shot for you
Wasted every night
Gone for every song
Faded every night
Dancing all night long

Drunk all summer
Drunk all summer
We be drunk all summer
Drinking and flowing and rolling
We're falling down

We're so late nights
Red eyes, amnesia, I need you

Right now I'm emotional
I lose control, when I'm with you
I hope I haven't said too much
Guess I always push my luck when I'm with you

Run away now
Like we're supposed to do
Take you to the back now
I take a shot for you
Wasted every night
Gone for every song
Faded every night
Dancing all night long

Drunk all summer
Drunk all summer
We be drunk all summer
Drinking and flowing and rolling
We're falling down

We're so late nights
Red eyes, amnesia, on ice
Late nights, red eyes, amnesia, I need you

Drunk, drunk, drunk, drunk
Drunk, drunk,
(You put your drinks up)
Drunk, drunk, drunk, drunk
Drunk, drunk, drunk, drunk
Drunk all summer
Drunk all summer

Reception

New York Times described that "“Drunk” is R&B delivered under a dark cloud, with its woozy imagery — “Late nights, red eyes, amnesia, I need you” — and its direct, almost spoken chorus, forgoing any vocal theatrics in favor of a casual nonchalance." Cleveland describes it as "a seductive R&B anthem".[4]
